National outbreak sickens 95 people in 14 states

SEATTLE, Aug. 28, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the CDC and FDA announced a Salmonella egg outbreak. A recall was issued on Wednesday by California-based Country Eggs LLC, with cage-free sunshine yolk eggs sold under the brand name, Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho and Nijiya Markets. According to the Food and Drug Association, grocery stores and food service distributors in California and Nevada received shipments of "sunshine yolks" or "omega-3 golden yolks," from June 16 through July 9. Each carton is labeled with a code "CA-7695", with sell dates of July 1 through Sept. 16, 2025.

The CDC reports cases as far back as January, with most illnesses occurring in mid-June through mid-July. Although California has identified the highest number of cases (73), twelve additional states have reported illnesses: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington.

No deaths have occurred; however, eighteen people have been hospitalized according to the CDC. The real number of those sickened is likely higher, as many never seek medical attention or are tested for Salmonella. In addition, it takes three to four weeks to positively link a case to an outbreak. The CDC reports that for everyone identified case, approximately 30 more people have been sickened.

Symptoms of Salmonella

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Vomiting
  • Headache

Symptoms can develop after an incubation period of between 6-72 hours. Reactive arthritis can develop after a Salmonella infection, as well as irritable bowel syndrome and other functional gastrointestinal disorders such as constipation, heartburn and acid reflux.
