Key West, FL, May 25, 2024 – The IRS Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP) invites tax professionals to an enriching three-day conference from June 21-23, 2024, in the beautiful and vibrant city of Key West. Organised by Kian Finance Authority, this conference offers a unique opportunity to acquire IRS credentials and advance your career while enjoying the stunning surroundings of the southernmost city in the U.S.

Understanding the IRS Tax Professional Program: AFSP

The AFSP is a voluntary initiative designed to promote ongoing education among tax preparers. Participation in the program showcases your proficiency in completing basic 1040 tax returns and understanding various aspects of IRS tax regulations. Kian Finance Authority has played a pivotal role in offering IRS Approved CE Courses, and with their comprehensive guidance, participants are well-prepared for the final test.

Requirements for AFSP Participation

To participate in the AFSP, the IRS outlines three key requirements:

1. Maintain an Active PTIN: Ensure your Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) remains active.

2. Complete Continuing Education (CE):

  • Accumulate a minimum of 18 CE hours from IRS-approved providers.
  • This includes 10 hours covering federal tax law issues, 2 hours dedicated to ethics, and a 6-hour refresher course on federal tax law updates.

3. Agree to Ethical Standards: Adhere to the ethical standards specified in Circular 230, Subpart B, Section 10.51, prohibiting federal convictions related to tax law changes and unethical behaviour.

Benefits of Enrollment

Enrolling in the AFSP program offers notable advantages:

Inclusion in the IRS Directory: All AFSP holders are listed in the Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications, enhancing visibility within the tax preparation community.

Is the AFSP Right for You?

Consider the following factors when determining if AFSP is suitable for you:

  • Enhanced Career Standing: Demonstrate your commitment to professional development and elevate your career prospects.
  • Representation Rights: AFSP holders have limited representation rights for returns filed post-December 31, 2015. They can represent clients for returns they prepared and signed, with representation restricted to certain IRS agents.

Overview of AFSP Format & Structure

The AFSP consists of:

  • Administration: The IRS does not directly administer the Annual Federal Tax Refresher (AFTR) Course or its test but provides course outlines and test criteria.
  • Course Content: Approved providers craft comprehensive tests following the AFTR course, covering new tax laws, general review, and professional responsibility.
  • Examination Details: The AFTR test includes 100 multiple-choice questions, with a maximum of 3 hours to complete the exam.
  • Course Completion: Passing the AFTR exam is essential for course completion. Failing means the provider will not report your course completion credits to the IRS.
  • Deadlines & Renewal: AFSP courses must be completed by midnight on December 31st each year for the IRS to recognize your AFSP status for the following year.
